Safi, the birthplace of this elegant platter, is one of three centers renowned throughout Morocco for their production of handmade pottery. One peek at this magnificent piece and you’ll know why…
Clay is pulled from the earth, stomped into coils by bare feet and left in the sun to partially dry. Once ready, that same clay is hand-sculpted by skilled artisans to create this distinctive, oversized shape before being engraved with a variety of fine tools. The platter is then fired in a large kiln, allowed to cool and finally handpainted in a brilliant array of eye-popping colors before being fired again. The entire process takes more than two weeks to complete, but the results are stunning. A brilliant choice to hold fruit, breads or chips at your next party, the back of these oversized platters is finished with two drilled holes which enable you to easily hang this piece as a work of art- it certainly warrants that distinction.
