Walking through a medina in Marrakech, I was deep in thought as I hurried off to a previously scheduled engagement. I paid precious little attention to the cacophony of merchants calling to me alternately in French and Arabic, their words drowned out by my own thoughts. I was a good ten steps beyond a small shop when I was jolted back to reality by a single thought: “What on earth is that man doing WITH HIS FOOT?” I immediately reversed my steps and journeyed back, to discover an elderly gentleman gingerly turning a manual lave, artfully spinning blocks of cedar wood into stunning BBQ skewers. An admiring feat of coordination, one hand was busy spinning the wood and the other stabilizing a chisel as his weathered foot controlled the delicate curves taking shape in the block of cedar. I stood transfixed for several minutes…and then bought out virtually every skewer in his shop.
Each handsome skewer features a generous 12” corkscrew metal shaft to securely hold orderly rows of mushrooms, peppers and meats.
